| Creation of a contemporary sustainable architecture in a suburban context which aims to achieve ‘zero carbon’ status. Solar energy will power the house and the clients transport needs, ensuring the house is ‘off-grid’. Rainwater will be stored for use in toilets, washing and the garden and green roofs. With 35% glazing, the majority of which is fully openable, the boundary of the inside and outside becomes blurred. | ![]() |

| Having access to daylight from only one side, the building is conceived as a series of interlinking volumes of varying proportions organised around a dramatic triple height open space where the spaces themselves dictate the internal hierarchies rather than having a set of pre-conceived and “labelled” insular separate rooms. The result is a dramatic mixture of heights and volumes that reveal themselves not only as you walk through the building but importantly in the articulation of the external surfaces | ![]() |

A small mews house with tiny cellular rooms was transformed by opening up and interlinking the enlarged volumes with the insertion of a central “open tread” stainless steel and walnut staircase. Light now floods through the three storey building thanks to the insertion of several large and strategically positioned roof-lights. With walnut floors throughout and a rigid and restrained pallet of colours and materials the property feels “several sizes larger” than before. |

The removal of all internal walls and floors and the insertion of a new load-bearing steel frame has allowed this building to “shrug off” its traditional cellular internal layout and to embrace a new and more flexible open interior. The raising of the extremely restricted ceiling at Lower Ground, the creation of a double height space and new folding sliding doors accessing the rear courtyard garden has transformed this location to become the “heart” of the property. |
